Chapter 1
Why Study Intercultural Communication?

Chapter 1 defines the term "culture" and describes the importance of intercultural communication competence in today's ever-changing world.

Culture sets forth the explicit rules, beliefs, assumptions, and social norms that organize people. At a very basic level, culture affects how parents interact with their children, as shown in a comparative study of American and Japanese mothers and their toddlers.

2. Read Chapter 1

You should read the chapter before completing Discussion Board entries or completing an online exam. It is suggested that you complete the Chapter 1 Guide while reading the chapter.

3. Complete the Chapter Guide

You should complete the chapter guide while you are reading the chapter. You can find Chapter Guides by clicking the "Chapter Guides" button on our main Blackboard (Bb) page.

Chapter Guides are for your own personal use and should not be turned-in to the instructor.

4. Post on the Discussion Board

Make one Original Post and two Reply Posts on the Discussion Board. Original Posts are due on Wednesday by midnight. Reply Posts are due on Saturday by midnight. 

To keep discussion varied and lively, each student has been assigned to a group by last name.  To find out which group you are in, click on the "Disc. Board" button above.

Please remember your group designator. You will remain in this group for the duration of the semester.

You must follow all the Discussion Board Guidelines in order to earn all the points possible on this assignment. Click "Disc. Board" link to review guidelines.

5. Take the Chapter 1 Exam

You can access the exam by clicking on the "Exams, Tests, and Quizzes" button on our main Bb page. 

The exam must be completed by the exam deadline -- next Tuesday at noon. 

If you do not finish the exam by the deadline, you will not be allowed to make it up.

If you finish the tasks listed above early, why not get a jump on next week's work?  Start reading Chapter 2 and complete the Chapter 2 guide.
